Advent 2017 Day 24

What a way to finish. I loved it.  This year's calendar overall catered nicely to my taste in beer.

Advent 2017 Day 10

I just finished the sour IPA from Day 9 and had this one right away.  It is another sour to me.  I would have enjoyed it more had that not been the case.  It was ok, but still not a style I am running out to buy.

Advent 2017 Day 9

Well I didn't expect much from this one as it blends two beer styles I am not fond of..... Sours and IPA's.  But this brewer has made something interesting here.  First, the IPA portion has some hoppy flavour without the bitterness.  It must be dry hopped.  And the sour kind of turns it into a cider.  The combination surprised me.  Don't get me wrong, I won't be running to the store to try and buy this one, but it was a pretty interesting, drinkable beer.  Would be much better on a hot day in July than a cool day in December.

Advent 2017 Day 8

This is pretty much my favourite style and this beer is an excellent example.  Fortunately, our own Blindman brewery in Lacombe produces a stout competitor.  This one was delicious, but Blindman is available.

Advent 2017 Day 7

Belgian Ales are another of my favourite styles, particularly Tripels.  I could pick out the Belgian yeast in this one blindfolded.  It makes my mind return to my visits to Brughes.  Very nice example.

Advent 2017 Day 6

Stouts and porters are two of my favourite styles, and milk stouts are an interesting subset.  I enjoy the occasional milk stout and this one was good. I also enjoyed their peanut butter milk stout a couple of weeks ago.  These beers are a bit on the sweet side though, so I can't take two in a row.

I'm glad I watched the video to get instructions on the hard pour process for the nitro.  I ended up with the great creamy head as promised.

Advent 2017 Day 5

One thing I like about the advent calendar is that I end up drinking a style of beer I don't normally enjoy, and I get surprised.  This is one of those beers.  I don't normally enjoy IPA'S generally; I find them too bitter.  I would place this one in the white IPA category, and although the beer is certainly hoppy, it lacks the intense bitterness of what I normally find in an IPA.  This was a very nice beer.  Lots of citrus and pleasant hop flavour.

Advent 2017 Day 4

It's been a busy week with me out of town a couple days and then busy in the evenings.  I am playing catch up to say the least.

Unfortunately, I must have gotten a bad bottle on this one.  This one had a real metallic nose and taste.  I took one mouthful and poured the rest down the drain.  I've heard a bunch of good reviews and I have not been disappointed in the past by this brewer so I won't allow this one bad bottle overshadow the others I have had from them.

Advent 2017 Day 3

I have enjoyed several flavoured stouts from this brewer and this one adds to that list.  Toasted coconut tends to go really well in a stout.  Check out their milk stouts, you won't be disappointed.

Advent 2017 Day 2

Now this one gives me hope.  I have had another beer from this brewer in the past... Was it last year's calendar?  Nice heavy creamy from in a dark beer.  The colour in the glass is a bit muddy brown.  I think it is an unfiltered beer which contributes to this look.  I enjoyed it.

Advent 2017 Day 1

Today's Shipyard Export Ale is a disappointing start for me.  I classify it as a pilsner as it has a distinctive skunky taste to it.  Not in my list of preferred styles.  I'm sure it represents the style well
but not my cup of tea and I won't be looking for this one in the store.

Advent 2017

Well here we go again with the Craft Beer Advent Calendar for 2017.  Mine just appeared on my doorstep as a reciprocal gift from one I had given a few years ago.  I hope it is a big box of goodness again this year.
